THE Nakau Cup rugby league competition in the remote Kompiam district of the Kompiam-Ambum electorate in Enga is set to become a breeding ground for Enga Mioks.

This was the vision of Kompiam man Rex Nakau Kiponge, when sponsoring the Kompiam League Nakau Cup last year with K30,000.

Kiponge took it upon himself to support youths in his district as tribal fighting, alcohol, marijuana usage and gambling had contributed to social problems and disharmony in the district.

Having seen all these problems, Kiponge, who is engaged by Highlands Highway Rehabilitation Programme (HHRP) as a technical auditor, came to their aid to sponsor rugby league and soccer competitions in the hope of promoting good values as well as sportsmanship in the community.

A keen rugby league supporter himself, Kiponge recognised sports as a vehicle to address social issues, rehabilitate communities, and help bring development.

He called on the PNG Rugby Football League, statutory bodies and business houses for support, saying rugby league would bring the communities together.

“Rugby league provides an avenue for discussion on development and social issues affecting our community but its needs support from all stakeholders,” Kiponge said.

Kiponge said the 2016 Nakau Cup competition would be bigger and better and would kick-off in April.
