THE first 10 ballot boxes from the Green River local level government were taken into the Papua New Guinea Defence Force barracks in Vanimo yesterday.
Counting started at 2pm after disputes by scrutineers, who wanted counting to start with boxes from Vanimo urban.
After the first count, sitting member Belden Namah scored only 10 votes.
Taking the lead was James Fanio with 312, followed by Willie Obow Inaru with 166 votes.
The only female candidate, Dorothy Tekwie, collected three votes.
Returning officer Peter Solo said there were 81 boxes to be counted and an absolute majority was expected to be over 17,000 votes for the primary count.
