OPPOSITION leader Belden Namah has condemned the cuts made to the defence, police and Correctional Services in the 2019 Supplementary Budget.
Namah said that if the Government wanted to develop the country they needed to deal law and order issues first.
“These are the people who are responsible for the security of our people,” he said.
“Especially for the Department of Defence, the Government knowing very well that there is unrest on the other side of the border in Indonesia.
“Papua New Guinea shares a land border with Indonesia, and I’ve raised this many times on the floor of Parliament, and with this cut, the Defence Force will not be able to carrying out operations.
“And in the event of a spill over, our soldiers will not be able to respond.”
Namah said that the Government had actually paralysed the entire Defence Force of the country.
More than K23mil has been cut from the Defence Department in the 2019 Supplementary Budget that has a deficit of K3.5 billion.

  • Yes Mr Namah, all sectors are vitally important for our country. In the situation where there is limited funding, it is recommended that you list all your needs and then “PRIORITIZE” your spending on what areas are more important and necessary at any given time given your financial capacity.

If you decide against cuts for any sectors, then what would you do to reduce the deficits.

As for your concern on the border, the Defense hierarchy needs to prioritize its activities and decide to work within the budget. Wheres the complication?
