NANAPARU Sharks slotted home a field goal to beat Elspidos 1-0 in the Unggai Offseason Rugby League grand final at Masumave in Eastern Highlands on Sunday.
Sharks pocketed K5,000 while Elspidos, from SP Block, settled for K3,000.
The two sides were evenly matched in all departments, but Sharks made their chances count as Goroka MP Aiye Tambua and Finance Minister Renbo Paita joined the crowd for the decider.
Tambua presented K2,000 and pledged K10,000 for next season while Paita vowed K20,000 for the competition.
“The competition is in Unggai-Bena, but I know that most of the players and supporters are from Goroka,” Tambua said.
Unggai league president Ben Wanjack thanked the two MPs for their commitment towards the competition.
He said the 34-year-old league had produced many players like current SP Hunters pair Jeffery Robert and Norman Brown, and former players like Glen Nami, Nicko Slain, Ivan Mosoka, Ifiso Segeyaro and Opae Soga.
Wanjack also thanked the A and B-Grade grand finalists and their supporters for helping end the season on a high note.
