CORRECTIONAL Services Minister Chris Nangoi says he expects more input from prison officers.
Nangoi said the call was for commanding officers, wardens and even detainees, to stand up and be counted as contributors to make the service the best department in Government.
“We can do this by making sure that we grow our own food to sustain us and also to supplement the rations given to our detainees,” he said.
“We can do this by carrying out and maintaining our facilities like maintenance work for staff houses and other facilities.
“I would like to see more low-risk detainees sent out to provide community service, to clean towns, do maintenance work for schools and hospitals and carry out awareness campaigns to educate and encourage school-aged children and young people to stay away from crime.
“This will ensure that we stop detainees from escaping in our Correctional institutions.”
Nangoi said he expected commanding officers, commissioned officers and officers at institutions to be at their best discipline-wise at work and during their off-days.
He said he has made a commitment to ensure that community correctional centres (rural lock-up) in Bogia, Menyamya, Kabwum, Baiyer and Balimo were commissioned between now and 2022. “I want to push the Government for more budget to fix ongoing infrastructure problems we face like poor staff houses, poor detainees’ facilities, fences etc,” he said.
Nangoi told the officers at Beon that he wanted to see everyone working in operations as custodial officers or project officers.
