THE Air Niugini Limited board of directors announced yesterday the appointment of director Karl Yalo as the airline’s new chairman.
The National Executive Council (NEC) made the appointment on Sept 20, after the passing of Sir Kostas Constantinou.
Yalo was initially appointed by NEC as a board director last May 4, for a term of three years.
He holds a law degree from the University of Papua New Guinea and has worked in various sectors including aviation, mining and project management.
In a statement, Air Niugini said that Yalo’s experience and expertise would help guide Air Niugini to deliver positive returns, whilst achieving key milestones in accordance with its strategic plan.
During the swearing in last week, Yalo said that he was satisfied with the role as chairman for the airliner company.
“I have played the role as a director of the board and now looking forward to providing the highest level of leadership to ensure continuity and stability,” he said.
“The board will continue to effectively manage expenditure and ensure the successful integration of new aircraft and crew under the re-fleeting programme.
“This significant fleet replacement programme will see the acquisition of 13 aircraft over the next five years, including nine Airbus A220s and two Boeing 787s Dreamliner.
“This is a major phase in Air Niugini’s fleet rebuild.”
