THE national men’s football team will have a second training camp from Thursday to Dec 22 at Papua New Guinea Football Stadium in Port Moresby, according to an official.
PNG Football Association technical director Paul Isorua confirmed this with The National last week following the end of the squad’s first two-week camp at 11-Mile outside Lae on Nov 26.
He said the players were given two weeks to rest before the second camp to prepare for the 2022 Fifa World Cup regional qualifiers in Qatar.
“The technical department is ensuring that training programmes for the national team will continue (until the regional qualifiers),” Isorua said.
“It is our goal to maintain player fitness and positive team bonding going forward.”
When asked about the specifics of the camp, Isorua said association general secretary Pius Letenge would provide an update on the national men’s and women’s teams this week.
Meanwhile, head coach Marcos Gusmao was expected to join the national men’s team for the second camp.
But a delay in his visa will mean that assistant coach Bob Morris will oversee the camp again.
Brazilian Gusmao told The National last week that more work was still needed to prepare the team for the qualifiers in March.
They have less than three months to complete their preparations before a final squad is picked for the tour of Qatar.
Attempts to get a comment from Letenge on the training programmes for both national teams were unsuccessful.
