Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Dfat) has funded a cooperative at Nawaeb in Morobe K71,000 worth of tools and materials.
Australian Dfat funded tools and materials for cocoa nursery and rehabilitation worth K71,000 for Sigo Cooperative Society of Situm and Gobari villagse in Labuta LLG.
This was done in partnership with the Nawaeb district development authority.
The tools and materials will enable the corporative to plant up to 5000 cocoa trees in the area.
Chairman Moses Sam said the cooperative would supply cocoa for the export market.
Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge thanked Dfat for the assistance. Dfat and charity World Vision are currently development partners in the district.
Wenge said this year was “maintenance year” for Nawaeb as it worked towards becoming an entrepreneurial district.
“We will work as partners in development to see the district becoming an enterprise district,” he said.
“All coffee, cocoa, fresh produce, poultry, livestock cooperatives and small-to-medium enterprises will be supported through the district agricultural support programme for the next four years.”
