PEOPLE living on the border of Raicoast in Madang, and Yus in Morobe, have been urged not to sell their cultural identities cheaply.
Lae District Tourism Bureau coordinator Maine Winnie told the people of Nayudos (Nankina, Nambis, Yupna, Domu, Oruwa and Som) who gathered to revive their cultural and sports festival at Teptep station on Sunday to instead identify the values, package them aptly and market them.
The cultural and sports festival which began in 1978 ended in 1997.
Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu was behind its revival on Sunday.
Winnie said indigenous culture and languages had values embedded in them which reflected their tribal and clan identities. But people were selling them cheaply to foreigners. He thanked Lae MP John Rosso for setting up the tourism bureau.
Saonu said the idea to use culture and sports to promote socio-economic development activities would become a policy to assist neglected people.
