NCD driving towards new roads

NATIONAL Capital District will soon have new routes for Public Motor Vehicles (PMVs) next year, says Road
Traffic Authority Director Nelson Terema.
Terema said the new routes would run through the new roads in the city to cater for the growing population.
“The city currently has 25 routes, however, many have been dysfunctional for some time now. Like Route 1, 2, 3, 5, 8,14,18,24 and 25.”
He said they were working in partnership with the United Nations women to survey, study and recommend the new routes.
“The study and survey will begin in January, once the study is complete we will introduce the new routes,” he said.
“Once we upgrade all 25 existing routes and also introduce the new routes here in the National Capital District, we will go out to the other branches like Kokopo and Lae and do the same there as well.”
He said it all depended on the demand; if people in certain areas or suburbs have a high demand for public transportation than the areas will be included in the routes.
He said the expression of interest to run and manage PMV buses will also be completed early in the New Year.
Meanwhile, PMV buses will continue their operations into the New Year.
