CITY Manager Bernard Kipit says the National Capital District Commission plans to spend K2 billion over the next five years for transport infrastructure in Port Moresby.
He announced this at the Consultative Implementation and Monitoring Council (CIMC) workshop in Port Moresby yesterday.
“We have achieved no-pothole policy on main roads, upgraded all major intersections to traffic lights, lit up four-lane roads with LED lights and built sheltered bus bays,” Kipit said.
“We want to make roads easier for operators to use by building good roads, car parks and footpaths with drainage systems for both normal and people with special needs.
“Our focus for the next five years will be sealing of suburban roads and achieving no potholes NCD-wide.”
He said public transport was not NCDC’s chartered function but that of the Road Transport Association, however, negotiations were underway for NCDC to take over public transport functions including the traffic registry.
Kipit said some of the new buses donated for Apec would be given to National Capital District Commision to operate under a corporate setup with cashless ticketing.
