NCDC gives K100,000 for Oceania qualifiers

The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) last week backed the Under-18 Oceania Youth Olympics Hockey 5s qualifiers with a donation of K100,000.
NCDC social services manager Kila Dick said the funding was not a sponsorship but an obligation as the host city for the event which starts tomorrow and ends on Saturday.
Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation (PNGSF) chief executive Peter Tsiamalili Junior received the cheque on behalf of the local organising committee made up of members from the Papua New Guinea Sport Foundation, High Performance Sport PNG, PNG Hockey Federation and Port Moresby Hockey Association.
Tsiamalili and Dick agreed that a partnership arrangement should be set for such activities in the future.
“The challenge is that we are trying to host a significant event in a very difficult economic climate, so it needs a collaborative effort from the Government, the private sector and the civil society,” Tsiamalili said.
“Future international events, especially with national federations, have to be pre-planned and pre-committed over three years and should be done in 12-month cycle.
“So that the government planning and funding committed are forecast and captured earlier on to eliminate risks that are involved with hosting such big events.”
Dick agreed with Tsiamalili, saying funding was one of the biggest issues affecting sports in the country.
Meanwhile, he challenged PNGSF to come up with ways to make its facilities more user friendly.
