NATIONAL Capital District (NCD) city manager Bernard Kipit has warned that any encroachment or development within the 9-Mile cemetery boundary is considered illegal and offenders are punishable by law.
Kipit issued the warning following recent dwelling developments popping up in the area.
“Please cooperate or we will have to use force to evict you,” he said.
“About 80ha at 9-Mile (portion 884) is designated as public cemetery under the Cemeteries Act.”
Kipit expressed concerns over the increasing number of unauthorised vehicles and persons using the cemetery access road for entry into the settlement and illegal developments.
He clarified that the use and purpose of the cemetery was for burial or further development plans of the NCD Commission (NCDC).
“The developments taking place in the area have not been approved by the NCD Commission board or its physical planning board. Thus, it is all illegal,” he said.
Kipit said when the construction of the 9-Mile to 14-Mile 4-lane road was completed, a permanent fence would be put up around the cemetery area to ensure structures used on the graves were acceptable and in compliance with legal standards.
“The design of the fence is before the commission’s physical and planning board for approval,” he said.
Kipit said there were also plans to build access roads in and around the cemetery and other development activities that complement cemetery uses.
He said the NCD and Central police command had been informed about the illegal developments taking place within the area.
