NCDRFU stages 7s trials to pick U18 teams for qualifiers

THE National Capital District Rugby Union carried out an Under-18 rugby sevens talent identification programme on Saturday at the Murray Barracks Oval, Port Moresby.
The sevens trails where held to select men’s and women’s teams to represent the country at the regional qualifiers in Sydney, Australia, (April 21-22), for the Youth Olympic Games sevens competition.
The Youth Olympic Games will be in Buenos Aires, Argentina (Oct 6-18).
Sevens has been include among the sports at the event with sevens representing the best chance for PNG to have a team sport participate at the YOG.
NCDRU clubs have registered their teams (including affiliates). Clubs who were unable to field teams due to insufficient numbers from this age group, were encouraged to register all eligible players.
Medical assistance was provided by the NDCRU, however refreshments, ice and other gear for the players were the responsibility of clubs and affiliates. In order to be eligible for selection all players had to be born in 2000 or earlier.
Following the trials both the men’s and women’s teams were announced, and following final confirmations this week the full train-on squads of 20 players each will be assembled to begin preparation for the regional qualifiers.
