New board appointed for NBC

INFORMATION, Communication and Technology Minister and Bougainville MP Timothy Masiu has welcomed the new National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) chairman and his board members yesterday, telling them that their appointment came at a critical time.
The new includes Pius Tikili (chairman), Emil Tenoa (deputy chairman), Zinnia Dawidi, former chairman Timothy Tala and Pastor Babani Harry.
Masiu said their decisions would determine whether NBC continued to be the “voice of PNG” or not.
“NBC is one of the oldest institutions established by the Government during pre-Independence to unite the country and it did a marvellous job in uniting a thousand tribes to become one nation,” he said.
“Thanks to the journalists and the reporters at that time who sacrificed their time and families to unite Papua New Guinea.”
Masiu said NBC had come a long way and had assets, managers, directors and board members appointed as trustees of NBC.
“This new board has mammoth tasks, including reviewing NBC’s performance, comparing the past and the present, review all decisions made by previous boards and managements, including taking stock of all its assets and chart a strategic direction going forward,” he said.
“To do that, the chairman and his board need to come up with a clear term of reference to guide them in reviewing all the decisions taken by the previous management, set some basic principles to guide you in your decisions.”
Masiu stressed that revitalising NBC’s provincial stations and considering re-deployment of short waves transmission should be some of the board’s primary focus.
