A NEW gym concept was launched in Hanuabada, Port Moresby, yesterday with the aim of getting more people involved in sports and addressing lifestyle issues.
Gym-In-a-Box (Giab) chief executive Tahina Booth, a Papua New Guinea Orchids player, said the concept was a prototype.
“Grass Skirt Project is a non-governmental organisation focused on preventing domestic and sexual violence, building stronger communities and improving public health and education outcomes in PNG through sports,” project founder Booth said.
“It’s the first of its kind and Giab will offer sports education to coaches and strengthen community health outreach programmes to deliver health initiatives in any location in PNG.”
The programmes target:

  • sporting group fitness;
  • school holidays;
  • health and wellbeing for adults;
  • people living with disabilities;
  • sports education for coaches, trainers and team managers;
  • healthy nutrition;
  • sports doctor consultation; and,
  • physiotherapy

Booth said she would like to arrange programmes to educate and empower women and girls.
She said if the programmes worked well in the first nine months, they would spread out to other communities.
Meanwhile, gym-in-a-box recipient Kila Malo said he was looking forward to working with Grass Skirt Project to help develop communities through using sports.
