New Ireland goes hi-tech

Business

NEW Ireland is importing advanced technology in electronics, space and solar systems in a K25 million joint venture contract with a Chinese-owned enterprise.
The contract was signed in Kavieng on Thursday between the CETC International Company Limited and the New Ireland Development Corporation, the business arm of the provincial government.
CETC Internation al is one of the world’s largest multi-national companies involved with electronic technology products, space and aviation electronics and solar systems apart from other hi-tech systems and devices.
It will design, supply and install the first large-scale solar power stations to light up Kavieng, Namatanai and Konos and beef up the diesel power outputs in the towns.
“This is a giant leap forward for New Ireland,” Governor Sir Julius Chan said.
“We want to build the capacity to be able to sustain major new business and investment projects under the autonomous government arrangement.
“The solar power station project is the first of its kind that will be phased into the PNG Power supply grid, and put an end to the power problems and outages we have for so long.”
