THE New Ireland executive council will partner with the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) International School in Kavieng to have it called the ‘Governor’s School of Excellence’.
This comes after the school board notified the provincial government that it was going to close its high school classes, particularly grades 9 and 11, due to unavailability of funds.
The New Ireland government approved during its final PEC meeting for 2018 that the school must remain open.
This was because of its quality education and its ranking as one of the top international schools in the country.
“We cannot afford to lose a quality school like OLSH,” Governor Sir Julius Chan said.
He said it was the only international school in the province where children were getting high-standard education without having to travel overseas.
Sir Julius said when expatriates came, they could be guaranteed that their children had a school to go to which was on par with what they were leaving behind.
The PEC approved the provincial administration’s division of education and OLSH’s mission to establish the Governor’s School of Excellence through a partnership delivery model.
The meeting approved the upgrade and rebranding of OLSH to the Governor’s School of Excellence and approved the subsidy.
