THE people of New Ireland should reflect on how they can continue to positively contribute to the progress of Papua New Guinea as they celebrated their provincial day yesterday, Governor-elect Sir Julius Chan says.
Sir Julius said the provincial government would not be hosting any official New Ireland Day celebrations due to the General Election 2022 (GE22), however, it was gazetted as a public holiday as per the provincial executive council (PEC) decision #10.
He advised New Irelanders including students, public servants, business owners, and the public to commemorate the day in their own way.
“New Ireland Day is a day when we should celebrate what New Ireland means to us and to PNG,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sir Julius also announced a list for outstanding New Irelanders which included Solomon Pela for public service and works, Bishop Stanely Lavoi for services to the United Church, Meredith Ku’usa to journalism, Mactil Bais for public service, Lamiller Pawut for public service and fisheries, Englebert Lutham for culture and community, Misbil Nelson for women and community, Sammy Missen for contributions to government, Linson Aaron for community and government and Monica Harris to public service.
Posthumous awardees included Ben Micah for contributions to politics and Gerald Meng Su Jee for his contributions towards infrastructure development in the province.
