UMBOI Island in Morobe has a new jetty, designed and constructed by Nawae Construction Ltd.

The Gasam jetty is one of three built by the company which was awarded the contract by the Coastal Fisheries Development Agency.

Construction on the jetty began last July and completed last November.

The barge is a specially-outfitted pontoon which has accommodation, messing, workshops, offices, water production plants, generators and power distribution, fuel storage plus a large crane/work platform.

It is staffed by 10 crew members. The barge is positioned by a tug boat.

The tug boat is operated by 10 vessel crew.

General manager projects and compliance Adam Hay said construction was completed quickly due to all concrete elements being pre-fabricated at the company’s Precast Concrete Facility in Lae.

On-site construction manager is Yamandi Mathias from Lagui in Salamaua.

The construction team was made up of 20 skilled Papua New Guinea workers.
