New law to give hope to people with disability

THE Disability Authority Bill 2018 which is to be discussed in the four regions before reaching Parliament will recognise people living with disabilities and involve them in the government development framework.
Community Development, Religion and Youth Minister Soroi Eoe said it was a way forward for the government through the department.
“The establishment of an institutional and legal framework for the disability sector is important and an appropriate approach as it will break barriers that hinder them to have equal rights to every aspects of life including political, economic and cultural,” he said.
“The successful completion of the consultation on the draft bill this week and the completion of the subsequent process towards the establishment of its legal framework will be a milestone achievement for the people living with disabilities, the government and the country to report to the United Nations on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.”
“Disability is a development issue and a disability inclusive development planning, budgeting and service delivery framework is vital in achieving the sustainable development goal.”
There will be consultations on the bill in the four regions and in Parliament. The Deputy Secretary of the department, Jeane Sliviak, said the bill would establish an authority in the community development department to implement policies and programmes at the provincial, district and local levels.
