New materials for women’s group

THE St Clements women’s group of Gagul village in Kerowagi district, Simbu province, is the lucky recipient of new farming and sewing materials presented this week as New Year gifts.
The gift were from Ramu Niugini Conservation executive director Anton Waie and the New Zealand High Commission.Mr Waie and Simbu Governor Fr John Garia brought the materials and presented them at Gagul village on Tuesday.The materials included five Singer sewing machines, sewing materials, threads, needles, sewing machine oil, two knapsack sprayers, 20 litres of weed killer, grass knives, spades, forks, vegetable seeds and two wheel barrows.Fr Garia commended Mr Waie, who successfully negotiated with the New Zealand High Commission, to make it possible for them to distribute the materials to the women’s group.
He said the initiative to seek help from external sources by educated elites to help the unfortunate women was good.
Fr Garia challenged other educated Simbus to follow the precedence Mr Waie has set to lure assistance from external sources to supplement what the Government is providing for the people especially in rural areas.
“I urge you to form registered groups such as this to draw in more Government support, you must till your land to make a living,” Fr Garia said.
Mr Waie said he had solicited similar support from several organisations to help more than 90 various groups in PNG.
He called on members of the group to put into good use the materials to help benefit everyone in the community.Spokeswoman for the group Theresa Ambaidungua said they had been struggling to survive since the formation of their group in 2005, adding the assistance was the biggest ever received.
She thanked the New Zealand High Commission and Mr Waie for making it possible for them to receive such assistance.
