SP PNG Hunters captain Ila Alu is happy with the fitness level of the new players in the 2022 pre-season train-on squad.
Alu said the 12 new players of the 32-man squad were actually setting the pace in training.
He said the courage shown by new players would put them all in good stead.
Alu said the 20 returning players from last season were being pushed to keep up with the enthusiastic newcomers with all eyes on the final 26 spots for the new season.
“Definitely the intensity in the first two weeks of training is higher than what we expected,” the former Rabaul Guria said.
“As a team we want to get better every pre-season and that is a challenge.
“I got into camp on Monday and seeing how the boys, especially the new players raising the bar to another level at training, is a big challenge for us.
“We have to continue work hard on getting better and build the team for 2022.”
Alu said the transition of new players into the Hunters system had been continuing.
He said there were a few experienced players in the team and they were bonding well with players.
“For some of us who have been in the team for quite a while now, we are used to having new players coming during off-seasons.
“It takes time to get to know them and understand them as we all come from different Digicel Cup sides.
“But it’s good to see players who have been around for a long time, sharing jokes and having fun with the new players and the rest of the team.
“Those are the things that create the team spirit and bonding.
“We will continue to do that going further into pre-season as we aim to make Hunters a better team in 2022.”
