New Porgera deal fishy

Letters

THE inconvenient truth on the Barrick negotiations will surface in due time.
I might be pessimistic about the outcomes of the recent Barrick negotiations, but what the Government is pompously grandstanding is too good to be true.
That is simply because in any negotiation, no party comes out winning 90-10 unless the other party is plain stupid.
The Government is reportedly winning 97-3, as if Barrick negotiators were super generous or dumb.
Barrick is a renowned multinational corporation in mineral extraction and is motivated solely in profit maximisation at any cost in any jurisdiction it establishes business.
I think let’s not pop the champagne just yet.
There is more to the story.
There are tradeoffs.
I see that the Government and Barrick are hiding them.
The costs could be far damaging to Porgera and PNG not so in the immediate, but in the intermediate and long-term.
Something is certainly not right.
Prime Minister James Marape is claiming a bonanza is coming just after the growing sentiments of him mishandling the Porgera case in the country’s worst ever economic turmoil.
These are just my thoughts.
