East New Britain Governor Nakikus Konga has urged people in Pomio to capitalise on economic opportunities created by a major agricultural project.
Konga said he was encouraged by the partnership between the people, the provincial government and the investor to promote economic empowerment.
He was referring to Rimbunan Hijau subsidiary, Gilford Ltd, which was driving development in Pomio through the Sigite Mukus Integrated Rural Development project.
The investor launched six projects on Friday valued at K3 million, including two bridges.
During the commissioning of the projects in Pomio, Konga said “being here in person underpins the special value I attest to the importance of giving special significance to our people in Pomio and our development partners”.
“There are valuable lessons we can learn from this day in order for us to turn such partnerships to be a force that can contribute to national development in terms of resource development and ultimately economic growth,” he said.
“I believe we can address all these if we as a district and province better organise ourselves and translate the Government’s policy into local workable strategies.
“In this province, we do not have any gas or oil fields. With the improvement of roads and transport infrastructure, we must sensitise our people to capitalise on economic activities and its spinoff benefits.”
