Northern Governor Gary Juffa has commended the appointment of Public-Solicitor Leslie Benjamin Mamu.
Juffa said Mamu was a young man who had shown initiative and courage to manage the Public-Solicitor’s Office.
“For the first time, the Public Solicitor’s Office is stepping up to protect the fundamental assets that belong to the people of PNG and that is land,” he said.
“For a long time, the Public Solicitor’s Office never took any cases to defend the interest of landowners.
“It has done so in a landmark case in regards to landowners in Northern.
“We are working with the Public Solicitor’s Office to take on those who are coming into the province, grabbing land and stealing resources.
“We are working very well with them. I can honestly tell you that Mamu is a credible young man, a professional and all of us must work towards supporting these types of people.
“I can honestly say that his appointment is definitely on merit. I know that there are other leaders in the Opposition who will also support his appointment. I want those of us in political office, both sides of the house, to support him so that he is able to perform his duties without fear or favour.”
The Public-Solicitor’s position was left vacant when incumbent Wala Tamati was appointed judge.
Manu was acting Public-Solicitor until he was confirmed by the Judicial Legal Services Commission.
