THE University of Papua New Guinea will establish a new bachelors programme next year that would train public sector employees in managing accounts.

That was announced by the UPNG’s executive dean of School of Business Administration, Lekshmi Pilai, during the launching of the department of finance’s degree programme on Friday.

He said the bachelors degree programme that would be under the School of Business Administration was called the bachelor of public sector accounting and would allow for public sector employees to undergo studies to enhance their skills in managing public funds.

He said the programme was under development and was being developed with the help of the Chartered Institute of Public Sector Accounting in the United Kingdom.

“It’s a specific programme on how to manage money at the public sector. It’s a two-year programme that would train staff on how to manage account, delivery of service and its development.”

He said managing money was a big problem that was not being done properly and staff needed to be well trained to effectively manage funds.

Finance Secretary, Ken Ngangan assured the university that the next batch of students from the department would be entering public sector accounting.

“However, priority will be given to our provincial and district officers. Because of their locations in most difficult areas and that they are now managing huge amount of money,” he said.

Ngangan said public sector accounting was extending to all public sectors in other government, especially those who were responsible in managing funds.
