WORK on the multimillion-Kina Pacific Maritime Industrial Zone (PMIZ) project in Madang will start this year after previous attempts failed, Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Jelta Wong says.
Wong said the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) would work closely with the Madang government over the next three years to ensure the PMIZ project progressed to its production state.
“We now have a good team with the vision for the people so we are going to work together to make sure that the PMIZ project gets off the ground to benefit the local people and our Government before our terms are up,” he said.
Wong said the PMIZ project was abused while millions of Kina had been used and misused since the project was initiated in 2004.
He said this during an agreement signing between NFA and Madang government in Port Moresby on Tuesday where the State and the provincial government would share costs of the investment to start the project.
The State will account for 60 per cent of the cost while Madang will contribute 40 per cent.
Wong said NFA had allocated K70 million for the project.
