NGI claim U18 girls title in schools league championships

NEW Guinea Islands (NGI) Under-18 girls just scraped through to snatch the title ahead of Highlands in the Coca-Cola National Schools Rugby League Championships at the National Football Stadium on Friday.
NGI beat Southern 18-0 and Northern 4-0 but lost to Highlands 8-0. Highlands beat NGI 8-0 and Southern 10-4 but lost to Northern 6-4. NGI were awarded the major crown on better percentage.
With better programmes introduced among schoolchildren, NGI have gone from strength to strength over the years.
All of the players were selected from the schools competition and featured some youngsters who made their championship debut in Port Moresby.
Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) selectors have put together U14, U16 and U18 boys, and U18 girls squads to be announced soon for domestic and international matches.
Selectors Max Tiri and Gairo Pepena have selected the squads but are awaiting PNGRFL to finalise them.
