THE Besta Football Association Cup in Lae is coming up next month and the New Guinea Islands are looking to send two teams to represent the region in the annual tournament.
Kimbe Soccer Association president Maha Waname, who is also the New Guinea Islands (NGI) Soccer Federations boss, said he was pushing to have two teams from the region compete in the Besta FA Cup.
Kimbe Soccer Association are winners of the NGI Besta FA qualifiers two weeks ago, however, Waname thinks it would be suitable if runners-up Bougainville awarded with a place in the tournament.
It is understood that in the men’s division, Mamose and Southern will be sending two teams to the Papua New Guinea Football Association-sanctioned event unlike NGI and the Highlands.
“I am pushing to see if NGI can have two teams compete in the Besta Cup, which means that runners-up Bougainville may travel to Lae,” Waname said.
“It is understood that Southern and Mamose can field two teams because of the status of their affiliations, unlike NGI and the Highlands where we don’t have many full member affiliations.
“But I am confident that for NGI, we can bring two teams to Lae. I have spoken with Bougainville and advised them to prepare in case.
“Confirmation on whether we can bring two teams for the men’s division will depend on an executive meeting this month (August).”
