NHC must prove hostels ‘not fit’

Letters, Normal

I ASK the NHC to show us, the tenants, the documents from the authorities to prove that the hostels in Hohola and North Waigani are “not fit for human occupancy” as stated in your eviction notice.
From my point of view, tenants can still live there while renovations are being carried out.
In the report titled “Housing woes getting worse” (The National, May 7), Housing Minister Andrew Kumbakor, when responding to series of questions raised by the Finschhafen MP Theo Zurecnuoc, said that “the cost of developing and running houses were higher and this made it difficult for NHC to compete with other industry owners”.
In respect to this statement, it seems that the NHC does not have enough money and yet it is still serving notice to tenants to vacate the hostels so that major renovations can take place.
In addition, the NHC’s prime purpose is to provide housing for Papua New Guineans and yet the NHC is going out of its way to abuse that prime purpose.
In the same article, Kumbakor stated: “We have sold some of our assets totalling millions of kina ,,,”
I think the two hostels concerned are in the list of assets sold.
Can the NHC and its minister be more critical and think carefully before selling or making dealings with those assets/properties because they are public properties/assets and are meant to provide service and not to make money.
