NHC will consider any deal between NHEL and partners: Kaupa

HOUSING and Urbanisation Minister John Kaupa says any joint venture arrangements between the National Housing Estate Ltd and its partners will be considered by the National Housing Corporation.
Kaupa was responding to the decision by the two shareholders to liquidate the company and transfer all its assets and some of its staff to the corporation.
The National Housing Estate Limited (NHEL) is the business arm of the National Housing Corporation (NHC). The two shareholder of the NHEL are the Finance Minister and the Housing and Urbanisation Minister.
Kaupa had told The National earlier that the transition period would be completed by the end of the year.
He said the reason to wind down the NHEL was because it had not performed the functions it was supposed to carry out. It also acquired a lot of liabilities instead of generating revenue.
Tenants owe the NHEL more than K4 million in rentals over the past four years. The NHEL on the other hand owes its service providers around K16 million. Kaupa said some tenants paid rentals directly to the NHEl’s while some paid through salary deductions.
He said tenants could not be evicted from NHEL properties as most were run-down and needed be fixed.
