NID project

May I comment on a PNG NID team leader’s letter titled ‘NID work needs Vision’ dated Dec 6 in The National.
I agree that the NID project looks complex regarding data inventory and organisation leadership however am convinced a further analysis could have revealed other important factors overlooked to disqualify the NID project at its preliminary stage.
PNG needs a biometric identification system which is the most viable option for electronic voting; linked to a central electronic system compatible for 5G technology that can be accessible through the nation’s communication and computer networks.
I hope PNG government will give NID some more careful thought now or regret the effort will have put into a possible failed nationwide project approaching 2022 national elections which I believe is one of the main targets for ID cards.
Surely a proper nationwide consultation similar to November 2018 reviews carried out by Constitutional and Law Reform Commission be helpful as it can reveal other vital factors overlooked.
