NINE schools are taking part in the Institute of Business Studies national school debate competition today.

They are the winners of debate competitions in their provinces.

The schools are Port Moresby International School (National Capital District),  Mt Diamond Secondary School (Central), Coronation College (Morobe), George Brown High School (East New Britain), Foursquare Secondary School (Enga), Cameron Secondary School (Milne Bay), Notre Dame Secondary School (Western Highlands), Goroka Secondary School (Eastern Highlands) and Don Bosco Secondary School (Gulf).

The school teams were given their topics yesterday and they go through the elimination rounds today.

The semifinals will be held tomorrow, with the grand final on Friday.

IBS human resource manager Sanjay Baalasubramani told the students debate ignited young minds to acquire a lot of information.

He said as Papua New Guinea was moving into a new chapter of development, it was important for young minds to be allied with the changes.

Foursquare Secondary School teacher Lulu Kolive thanked IBS for giving students the opportunity to  exercise their ability to think.

She said the debate had provided an opportunity for the students to understand the changes PNG was going through.

She said it had offered controversial topics for the students to research and understand.

“They not only represent their schools but the people as well,” she said.
