THE Peace Rugby League Nines is tailored for Bougainville youths as they prepare for the Referendum in November, according to an official.
The tournament will be held in Buka, North Bougainville, from Oct 22-25.
“It is aimed at showcasing rugby league skills in partnership with Autonomous Region of Bougainville Rugby Football Union under a unification programme to move both sports to another level,” Bougainville Rugby League chairman Avis Vanua said.
“The principle of rugby union and league in the region is for youths to step up and assist the community with programmes that keep them busy.
“The tournament is an open invitation to all four confederates — New Guinea Islands, Southern, Mamose and Highlands — as we look to showcase our talent in Bougainville.
“Our players usually miss out on Digicel Cup, SP Hunters and PNG Kumul selection.
“The objective of the tournament is to promote unity, gender equity, peace and rehabilitation among youths, enhance character building, promote sportsmanship and team discipline and respect in Bougainville.”
Team who have shown interest in the tournament are Halia Mujruks, Suhin Crusaders, Eltupan Sharks, Kuskus Pride, Selau Wantora, Hangan Bakuls, Haku Hawks and Northern, Peit Kore.
Others are Ieta Barbarians, Newtown Knights, Arawa One, Arawa Two, Peace Panthers, Malasang Warriors One, Malasang Warriors Two, Mal4 Tribes and Hammerhead Tigers.

  • Excellent idea, Bougainville does not need independence but more inclusive socio-economic activities that enhances ordinary people to participate more meaningfully in society. In sports, Bougainville already has Bougainville FC and the same should be done with rugby league with a Bougainville team in the Digicel Cup competition. The players in these representative teams must be selected from Bougainville and play all around the country like what is happening already. I believe people from Bougainville will feel a sense of belonging rather than feel alienated with the introduction of inclusive programs like sports, SME’s and other such socio-economic programs that allows people to participate more meaningfully thereby enhancing a sense of belonging.
