NINETEEN people were treated for injuries in hospital after two buses and a car collided in Port Moresby on Friday.
St John Ambulance head of clinical and operational support Jacquie Hennessy said the serious cases had head and chest injuries.
She said the 19 injured people were transported to the hospital by ambulance.
It brought to 24 the total number of road accidents attended to by the St John Ambulance officers this month. According to the National Capital District/Central divisional police command, the accident occurred when a bus trying to avoid a checkpoint mounted by officers of the Road Transport Authority crashed into a car and bus along Godwin Road.
The bus was exiting Ugava Street and ran into traffic on Godwin Road. It overturned.
The injured were locals and a Filipino man who was in the car.
Traffic police are now investigating the crash.
Hennessy said since the beginning of the year, the St John had attended to more than 200 road accidents. She reminded drivers to drive with care.
“Slow down, drive according to the road conditions, wear a seatbelt. If there is an accident, please call 111 and wait for the ambulance to arrive. Please do not move patients,” Hennessy said.
“People suffer far worse outcomes when transported to hospital in private vehicles or taxis, especially if they are trapped in the vehicle and removed by unqualified bystanders.”
