IMBONGGU MP Pila Niningi says he wants to light up his district through roll out of electrification projects to complement other developments taking place in sectors such as education and health.
Niningi presented another K500,000 to PNG Power Ltd (PPL) in Port Moresby on Friday for the Kaupena to Kiripia electrification project.
Niningi gave a cheque for K100,000 to PPL two months ago for the rural electrification project and urged them to start the project as soon as possible.
PPL acting managing director Douglas Mageo thanked Niningi and Imbonggu, Southern Highlands, for the partnership.
He said once PNG Power received additional funding from the National Planning Department, they would continue work on the project.
The Kaupena (Lipenomu) to Kiripia rural electrification project crosses provincial borders of Southern Highlands and Western Highlands.
Niningi said once the project was completed, it would to benefit more than 50,000 people.
“The people living in this area are some of the most marginalised people when it comes to government service delivery,” he said.
PNG Power Ltd will start work immediately at Lipenomu and move on to Kume, over to Tona, up to Piambil, across the border to Gia and to Kiripia in Western Highlands. Niningi, who is also the Inter-Government Relations Minister, earlier said he wanted Imbonggu to be transformed into a model district with proper road infrastructure and communication, health, education and social services. He said people in his district needed to be able to access basic services.
