NIUPOWER has backed the annual Sports Tok Sevens rugby union tournament with K38,000.
The support is a boost for the tournament as it celebrates its fifth anniversary this year.
A cheque presentation was done last week by NiuPower external affairs manager Wellington Bellawa to the tournament organisers.
He said NiuPower had been involved in community projects in Hiri-West villages in Central. “NiuPower has community programmes which cover rugby union too,” Bellawa said.
“We’ve being carrying out the Get into Rugby programme in five schools.
“This is part of our social responsibility in contributing to the development of rugby union in communities.”
The sponsorship is part of efforts to develop rugby union in Hiri-West communities.
“We also want our players to venture into rugby union especially in sevens,” Bellawa said.
“We’re grateful to be part of the tournament this year. Hiri-West will register three teams.”
Organising committee chairman Benson Upas thanked NiuPower for the sponsorship.
He said the tournament had been a self-sponsored event since its inception.
“It’s being five years running this tournament and we’ve being doing it ourselves,” Upas said.
“We’re privileged to have Niu Power on board with the sponsorship This support will help improve the standard of the tournament.”
Upas said the tournament would be held from June 11-13 in Port Moresby.
