No bail for alleged rapist

THE LAE District Court refused bail for a man charged with rape of a minor after stating in court that the offence was becoming prevalent and the court had a duty to protect women and young girls in communities.
The accused from Wewak in East Sepik, appeared before magistrate Tera Dawai at a special sitting on Wednesday for the alleged offence against a 10-year-old in a settlement in Lae last month.
The police prosecutor after providing the police brief, stated that sexual offences cases were becoming common in the country and women and young girls were the victims.
Therefore, the accused should be denied bail but could get his lawyer to make a proper bail application in the National Court.
According to police reports, it was alleged that on April 19 at around 9pm at Awagasi Block in Kamkumung, Lae, there was a fight and the victim’s parents came out of the house to see what was going on.
The victim was in the house when the accused called her into a vehicle allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The police report indicated that when the victim went to the defendant, he told her to go into a vehicle which was parked in the area where he was alleged to have.
It was alleged that the victim’s mother returned from the store with ice cream and called the victim and her brother. Kausik allegedly left the victim and fled.
When questioned by her father about her whereabouts, the victim told him what had happened and that it was not the first time that defendant had sexually assaulted her.
