No-boat Alotau officers can’t keep up with criminals at sea

TRACKING and identifying robbery suspects in Alotau have been made even more difficult for police because the robbers travelled mostly by sea, police say.
Compounding the issue is the fact that police do not boats or dinghies to do their work.
Acting provincial police commander Inspector George Bayagau said suspects in several big robberies were still hiding and travelling by sea.
He said they had used all their resources in investigations and mobile communication was another issue they were facing.
“The core leaders, who are well known in leading robberies, have been moving around by sea,” he said.
He said police were working hard and doing their best to make arrests. “These are hard-core criminals,” he said.
Meanwhile, police operations are ready for the Alotau Canoe Festival later this month.
