No more adjustments to education calendar, says Kombra

NO adjustments will be made to the education calendar because of election disruptions but teachers have to cover the lessons that will be missed during the extension of the holiday week, says Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra.
Kombra said this following reports of classes not starting according to calendar dates due to election-related disruptions.
“We will not make any adjustments for the second time as we have already made the first adjustments by one week to allow for election and students should have returned to school on July 18,” he said.
He said for those schools that had taken one week or two weeks extra, teachers must adjust to cover the weeks that would be missed.
He said provincial education boards had to assess situations of schools that were affected and make the necessary decisions.
Kombra said the department had not received any official reports of schools affected, but it was unfortunate and disappointing that some schools in the highlands and coastal region as well were burnt down. He said the actions could deprive and deny children’s right to education.
“It is disappointing that innocent children’s life are disturbed and we hope that services could be brought back soon,” he said.
Kombra said it was up to leaders to bring peace and get students back to school.
“My interest and our interest in education is to give an education for every child and that responsibility must come from all of us, from leaders down to individuals,” he said.
Kombra said instructions were clear, teachers were allowed to take part as elections officials but they must remain neutral and schools facilities were not to be used for counting unless there were no other venues.
