Nominations for 2022 SP Sports Awards open

NOMINATIONS for the 2022 SP Sports Awards (SPSA) for outstanding achievements in 2021 are open for 12 categories after the launch in Port Moresby yesterday.
This will be the 30th year of the event through a partnership between the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee, PNG Sports Foundation and South Pacific Brewery.
Brewery corporate affairs manager John Nilkare said apart from celebrating the achievements of 2021, this year’s awards night would highlight how the event had evolved since 1992.
“With the support of other sponsor families, we have seen the growth of sports in the country as well as the SP Sports Awards,” he said.
“It’s sports that unite people and their passion to be the best by winning titles.”
The categories are:

  • Male athlete of the year;
  • Female athlete of the year;
  • Team of the year;
  • National performance of the year;
  • Junior male athlete of the year;
  • Junior female athlete of the year;
  • Community sports initiative;
  • Best sports person living with a disability;
  • Official of the year;
  • Photo of the year;
  • Media of the year; and,
  • People’s choice award.

Meanwhile, committee president Sir John Dawanincura thanked the brewery for supporting the event as well as the committee and Team PNG for the last 30 years.
“On behalf of the board and management of the committee, we thank SP Brewery for continuously supporting the awards,” he said.
“Nominations for the awards are now open and everyone is welcome to nominate. I urge the national federations to take lead in the nominations as you know best which team or athlete performed outstandingly in 2021.”
Nominations for all categories will close on March 25 before the announcement of the winners during the awards night later this year.
