Northern confederate matches set to hit snag after incident

THE Northern confederate of the SP Brewery-sponsored National Provincial Championships will most likely hit a snag this weekend following an incident at Scrum Oval last Wednesday.
Concerns had been raised on the game between Kilituas and Madgauns after an official (named) assaulted a volunteer touch judge unexpectedly which saw players from his team joining in.
There were no PNG Rugby Football Union officials to be seen and the parent body failed to organise referees and touch judges for the championships. The touch judge is a player from one of the local clubs.
The National was told that PNGRFU, which facilitated the tournament, had allegedly failed to provide guidelines for the competition, as well as details for match officials and the judiciary for the three confederates. The outcome of this weekend’s matches will depend on the PNGRFU’s intervention to sort out the incident.
The results of the matches on Wednesday saw the Madang team, Madgauns made up students, having the upper a hand over their bigger opponents, Goroka Kilituas. Madgauns beat Kilituas 10-3 in first game.
In the second match, the two home teams, Hammerheads and Tiger Sharks, had a nail-biting finish with the the former racing out winners 12-10.
