NORTHERN Under-16s won all three of their matches to be declared winners at the Coca-Cola National Schools Rugby League Championships in Port Moresby yesterday.
They beat the New Guinea Islands 6-4, Highlands 18-16 and Southern 10-4 to claim the major honours.
The U18 girls’ teams take to the pitch at the National Football Stadium today to end the championships. Southern, with the likes of Port Moresby Rugby League players Mensurnia Lofena and Belinda Waula, will look to dominate their opponents.
The pair have been playing in the city’s premier competition for a while now and are capable of steering their team to victory.
Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka said the girls’ division was exciting due to the fact that most of the youngsters were potential Orchids (national women’s team) players.
He thanked major sponsor Coca-Cola for its commitment to the National Schools Rugby League Championships in helping unearth future stars.
National selectors Max Tiri and Gairo Pepena were busy selecting the best players in the U14, U16 and U18 boys, and U18 girls divisions during the week.
