Not all male UPNG students are bad

Letters

THE recent harassment of female students at the University of PNG (UPNG) is bad.
This incident has shown the nation the poor attitude and conduct by some males towards females.
But, the fact remains that not all male students at UPNG are bad.
The actions of a few led to the recent headlines in the media, which gave the university a bad reputation.
UPNG male students are undeniably future leaders of our nation.
The premier institution is breeding our prime ministers.
UPNG has, so far, produced our nation’s prime ministers.
I want the public to know that it is only a few that are ruining all male students’ reputation.
Harassment of female students has been an ongoing issue and we agree that the university’s administration should address it.
I believe UPNG has an existing code of conduct that students need to abide by.
The issue of harassment has sparked public debate.
There has to be a fair judgment.
To understand this issue, the following questions need to be asked:

  • WHAT prompted the harassment?
  • ARE there some previous argument between the victims and the perpetrators? and,
  • IS the victim’s dressing code acceptable?

I believe violence against all genders happen for a reason.
Times are changing but we cannot eradicate sin.
There is no such thing as violence eradication, it can only be prevented and reduced.
Violence exists all over the world.
India records some of the highest violence against women and girls.
There is a clear indication that most male students of UPNG are good.
The last couple of days have been a sad day for UPNG students.
Educated guesses and judging without full knowledge and understanding of the students’ lives will cripple the university’s spirit of unity.
It will only tarnish the reputation of UPNG.
I still believe that there are good male students out there who do their best to abide by the rules and respect women.
