Not-so-sweet comments go viral on social media

National

VIDEO clips of the looting and violence in PNG have gone viral, attracting unflattering comments. Below are some of them:
@michaelvanderkop9295: Showing primitive behaviour, won’t engage in dialogue before rioting, looting and violence, no respect for the struggling businesses that they are destroying. They demand and they take for themselves that which others earn. There are so many other instances of this type of scenario all around the world too. It’s such a shame. Will we ever see civilization peaceful and content with living together?
@billydog1954: Now we know why they don’t have a thriving tourism industry.
@nas2914: As someone who was working with one of the stores they looted which I won’t name, while we were stuck on third floor of our building, the fear we experienced sadly traumatized some of our co-workers. We keep asking ourselves how could the neighbourhood that surrounds our stores that we treated so fairly and outmost care do something like this to us? I am sorry but yesterday we witnessed a failure of humanity.
@davidaikswemin3027: I’m from PNG. We say we are not primitive, but yet we show it with our actions. Such a shame and how sinful. I condemn these primitive actions, and warn my country to repent before we destroy our country ourselves.
@eugenekubak7857: This behaviour is uncalled for … primitive mentality. The problem is with the Government not these innocent shops who are also struggling to make ends meet!
@kadimneg4576: Nothing wrong with the shops, they are also paying the tax. Just bring everything to Parliament and leave the innocent shops alone. It’s the Government that causes the cost of goods to rise, not the shops.
@BlackTarH: Looting is never justified.
@Marns0211: I’m very very sad for all business owners in POM and elsewhere throughout the nation. As a Papua New Guinean, all I can say is, whoever’s behind all this rioting and looting should advise the public not to touch all business houses cause they are also paying tax s. And most of all, providing services. Instead should focus their point of attack directly on whoever’s responsible for (the) taxation thing.
@abrahammatai4389: Power to the people
@caLiDaRi: Talk about the Wild Wild West.
@lusigiantkartika7400: This is the dream country for warrior independence in west Papua.
@Maggie_Dawana: These are people from the nearby villages. Very bad. Such a shame for Papua New Guineans. How could we do this to the businesses that provide job opportunities to our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters … I am ashamed of how we carried ourselves during this time in our own land. We do not possess the character of a normal human being. We are primitives. We were not there when God was issuing out common sense.
@lawrenceelias9675: CPL group is owned by Papua New Guineans through the founder (who) originated from India. Major shareholders are also super funds of PNG. Think before you act. Due to opportunists, we need to endorse the Vagrancy Act to become law.
@CharlesMuri-se6nv: What happened to the recent record budgets that you boast about? Where is the richest black Christian nation? Let’s take back PNG from this weak and irresponsible government.
@campbellmorrison8540: What a shame, this sort of . . . . . does nobody any good, least of all the poor and ill-educated who are probably the root of these activities. I understand frustration etc but a new TV etc isn’t going to make an ounce of difference if you are poor already. Those who are causing the grief will move away and the poor are left with an even bigger shambles. So sad.
@wairabelle-1313: Please Marape, get the Vagrancy Act passed to stop such people who can (be) well off in their provinces. Also support them especially in the agricultural sector so that they can be profitable and contribute to the nation’s development.
@johnbanda5680: Port Moresby, hunger is coming after this looting. Be prepared. A city that depends on imports of rice and wheat and almost all processed food. Lord please help our Christian country to think and walk right for your glory.
@jonahphilip8008: Stop misleading the people.
@FelixKembu: Very sad to see this. Taxpayers, innocent business houses are affected … It’s time to impose the Vagrancy Act on those who have nothing to do in the city.
@eugenekubak7857: It was only a matter of time.
@pandabearmycat5206: Ignorant. Now that store nor any other store will be using that building. Which will prevent the elderly or handicapped from buying their groceries close to their homes. (I) guarantee that the elderly, handicapped and the upright citizens will be angry that the store is closed. Yet, if you notice, these are mostly teenagers. Which means the parents, neighbours, teachers or coaches aren’t involved in their lives. Because they do not know right from wrong. They say it takes a village to raise a child but either the parents are working too much or not teaching them anything. Or, everyone else is so glued to their phone that they aren’t teaching these kids what is expected of them.
@garydurandt4260: So police are not policing and then the people do this because the police are not policing? Give them another 200 years to civilise.
@khava007: For a minute I thought this was Gaza.
@vanessakadiat2336: Such a shame seeing this video … the so-called Christian country.
@bradleyhatch3762: Say what you want about colonialism but I’m glad I live in a country that was colonised by Europeans who taught us how to be civilised.
@targisgeorge6787: Mainly young youth population is involved. Create jobs for them and reduce taxes, reduce prices for basic goods and services. Or otherwise, worse come to worse, introduce Vagrancy Act in the cities and towns.
@ilguitaro: Unexpected? Anyone who has spent any time in Port Moresby as I have, would know the place is a pressure cooker of lawlessness, poverty and extreme danger. That the place is not equal to a war zone is the miraculous part!
@samueldavid9732: Simple and honourable thing for PMJM to do is step down and resign.
