KUMUL Petroleum National Soccer League defending champions Lae City are continuing to train in small groups in accordance with the Covid-19 state of emergency restrictions, says a senior player.
Midfielder Jacob Sabua told The National that despite the sacking of former coach Peter Gunemba and a mass player exodus, the team were intact and focused on a strong finish to the season.
“For those of us who stayed back, we’re happy with how things are and we’re just taking training one day at a time in small groups,” the Papua New Guinea international said.
“I think we’re ready for what’s going to come our way if the season resumes. We lost most of our senior players but a good number of our junior players have stepped up to make a good impression.
“Since the team in that sense is still new, we need to gel well and work on our combinations.
“The more matches we play together, the better.
“For the team, we’ve been doing some light runs in small groups.
“We’ve been in touch lately with our coach Bob (Morris) and we’re getting to do the small things at training.”
After 10 rounds, City are second with rookies Vitiaz United leading the competition.
