HEKARI United were knocked off the top of the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League ladder after a shock 1-2 defeat to Star Mountain in round 10 at the Papua New Guinea Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Saturday.
The loss saw Hekari drop to third while newcomers Vitiaz United were the big movers, jumping from third to pole spot for the first time after their 3-2 win over Morobe United. Defending champions Lae City remain second.
Despite Hekari boasting the experience of Michael Foster, Daniel Joe, Kolu Kepo, Eric Joe and Vincius Kryzozun, they were unable to penetrate the Star Mountain defence led by Bernard Babona, Willie Yumb and Nicky Nare.
After a scoreless first half, Star Mountain were the first to find the net in the 50th minute through Tau Winnie.
The Central veteran chipped over Hekari goalkeeper Dane Tomare who rushed up and failed to defuse a Star Mountain raid.
Hekari had 70 per cent of possession but they could not execute well with Brazilian Eric Joe missing a couple of opportunities right in front of Star Mountain’s goalmouth.
It wasn’t until three minutes of additional time when Daniel Joe level equalised with his effort deflecting in off the Star Mountain defence.
However, Hekari’s celebrations were short-lived as Star Mountain pulled one back 45 seconds later through Taman Romas whose effort from the left edge caught Tomare napping.
Star Mountain coach Percy Mataio told The National after the match that his side had prepared well for the match.
He said they stuck to their game plan and pulled of the win.
