THE Catholic sisters from the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) prioritise unfortunate children in their outreach ministry, according to director for DMI Sisters Catherine Devadass.
“We prioritise unfortunate children because today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders and the unfortunate cannot support themselves financially,” she said.
“We teach children their basic rights, that’s why every year we go to the settlements to give special attention to orphans along with the Indian High Commission to support these children with books, uniforms and also along with strong Christian principles and we will continue to do this work.”
The Indian High Commission donated school stationery to DMI in Port Moresby on March 6.
Indian High Commissioner Inbaskar Sundaramurthi said: “We work closely with the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) because they know and understand children who are genuinely deserving (orphans).
“Last month we started with food donations and it has proven to be more satisfactory to us as people, we are delighted to give, even in a small way, to the communities here and in the country,” he said.
He told the children that nothing in life was free and that the donation twas only to encourage them to work hard in life.
“You must learn to earn a living from the sweat of your brow despite all the challenges you face in life because nothing that comes easy will last.
“Use these textbooks and study them, I have brought more from India as soft copies and the DMI Sisters will give you excess to them, make use of them.”
