A COMMITTAL Court in Waigani has struck out the case against Peter Nupiri who was charged with interfering with the electoral process and instigating violence in Southern Highlands.
Magistrate Danny Wakikura ruled last Friday that there was not enough evidence to sustain the charge.
“The case is struck out and Nupiri is discharged,” he said.
“Bail is to be refunded.”
Nupiri, who contested the Southern Highlands provincial seat in General Election 2022 but lost, said he was very happy with the legal victory.
“This issue of police arresting citizens without credible evidence must stop as it has caused so much anxiety and disturbance to so many people. Police should present reliable evidence before the court if they have to arrest and charge a citizen with an offense and not delaying the process and causing cases to be dismissed and struck out,” he said.
Nupiri said police should conduct thorough investigations into the mayhem that happened in Mendi and bring those suspects to justice.
“I was taken to court for a political mayhem caused by many and am pleased to be cleared,” he added.
“Now that I am free from this case, I am looking forward to focus on my election petition against Southern Highlands Governor William Powi that was set for trial in July.”
